USA Fencing: Age & Classification Eligibility
Qualifying Information for the 2018 Summer National Championship
Eligibility
Section 2.6.1 of the Athlete’s Handbook discuss the requirements for a fencer to fence at a divisional, either for the Summer National Championships or the Junior Olympics. They are summarized here below, for your convenience, but USA Fencing official documentation is always the final authority in these matters. In order to compete in a division qualifier, the following must be true:
- A USA Fencing competitive member registered at the division (Central California in our case); please check USA Fencing’s membership list to confirm a fencer’s division affiliation – that is what is used by tournament organizers
- Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident
- Meet age and gender requirements for the specific event they wish to participate in
- Even if the fencer doesn’t meet the stated age for an event, based on the National Points standings, they may still be eligible to fence; see Table 2.5.1 in the Athlete’s Handbook for these specific situations
Qualifying
Section 2.6.1 and Table 2.6.3.1 of the Athlete’s Handbook further discusses whom may or may not qualify in these division hosted events, and are summarized below. As always, USA Fencing’s documentation is the final authority in this matter.
- The top 25% of all participants (rounding up) in an event will qualify, with all participants qualifying for an event with 3 or fewer fencers
- For Y14 events: fencers who are on the National Rolling Points list are skipped over when looking at the top 25% of fencers
- For all other events: there is no skipping over of already qualified fencers
